Quick And Simple Guide to Brewing with an AeroPress
The AeroPress is the perfect coffee brewer for everyday use, satisfying the needs of coffee connoisseurs and casual brewers alike. There are so many different recipes you can experiment with: regular and inverted, easy or extremely difficult, old school and high tech.
After years of playing with the AeroPress, our suggestion is pretty easy: pick a recipe you like, one you enjoy brewing, and then play with it. For those just starting out with an AeroPress, there are few tricks to keep in mind:
- Too bitter? Grind your coffee coarser, maybe shorten the brewing time, or try to lower the water temperature.
- Too weak? Try to do the opposite.
Now keeping that in mind, let’s get started with this easy recipe which is the perfect starter guide to AeroPress brewing.
What else do you need?
Apart from coffee and water, you'll need:
Aeropress
Cup
Paper filter
Scale
Timer (it can be integrated with the scale, but also the one in your phone will be perfectly fine)
Kettle (or even a simple pot) to warm up the water.
Thermometer (but you can have a pretty decent cup of coffee even without it)
-Warm up the water up to around 94°C. This parameter can be adjusted to suit the type of roast (in general, the darker the roast, the lower the temperature). If you prefer to estimate, aim for water that is quite hot but not yet boiling.
-Insert the filter into the AeroPress, assemble it and put it on top of your cup. Make sure that it’s big enough to contain 280ml of water. When the water is hot enough, pour a little into the AeroPress to rinse the filter and warm up both the AeroPress and the cup.
-Grind the coffee. If you have your own grinder, the coffee will be fresher and flavourful. If you don’t, go to your local specialty coffee shop and let them grind the coffee for you.
-Drain the water and then put the cup along with the bottom part of the AeroPress onto the scale. Add 18g of coffee, ensuring that it’s the right weight. Tap the AeroPress gently to get an even layer of coffee.
-Start the timer and begin pouring. You should pour 30ml of water and then let it steep until the timer reaches 30sec. This is known as “Blooming” and it helps to remove carbon dioxide from the coffee, giving it a nicer taste.
-When the timer reaches 30sec, pour the remaining 250ml of water (reaching a total of 280ml) and insert the plunger to create a vacuum.
-Let it steep for 1 minute, and when the timer reaches 1:30, grab both the AeroPress and the cup and swirl it a few times.
- When the timer reaches 2 minutes, push the plunger down gently until you hear a characteristic “hiss” sound. This takes about 20-30sec.
-Now your coffee is ready! Remember to get rid of the coffee grounds and rinse the AeroPress properly, and then it’s time to enjoy your coffee.
