Coffee is a significant part of most people's breakfast. Some prefer a good old latte, others the classic black coffee. But some take it a step further and add butter or bulletproof coffee. High in fat and calories, a cup of either of these provides more nutrients than a whole meal. What exactly are these, and should you give them a try? Let's have a look. What's butter coffee? Butter and its healthy fats have made their way into caffeine. While a concoction of coffee and fat may not sound that appetizing, there are reasons why it is trending and has health benefits. Due to its popularity in the keto diet, butter coffee is common because it is high in fat and low in carbs. Easy to make, a cup of butter coffee can be brewed up in no time. All you have to do is simply brew up a cup of coffee, add some 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter/ clarified butter (ghee), and blend it up. The mixture will become a foamy liquid, resembling a latte with a creamy consistency. What is bulletproof coffee? For those who're not familiar with the term, no, it's not coffee that makes you bulletproof or is resistant to bullets. Its simply coffee combined with oil and butter, usually consumed as a substitute for breakfast. With many health benefits, a lot of people prefer including it in their morning routine. Dave Asprey invented this coffee. The American entrepreneur is the founder of the company Bulletproof Nutrition, Inc. Before this invention, the concept of mixing fats in coffee was unknown. The original way to make a bulletproof coffee is to get black coffee beans, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil (medium-chain triglyceride). The grass-fed butter is a source of healthy fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega 6. But it's the MCT oil that makes it uniquely bulletproof-branded. MCT oil is an easily digestible fat compared to others and has anti-microbial properties. What's the difference between butter and bulletproof coffee? Yes, both involve mixing fats in coffee, but there's a difference. The bulletproof recipe uses a different type of coffee bean than butter coffee. The beans used in the former and need to be purchased specifically for the purpose. The beans can be purchased from many bulletproof coffee companies available in the market. Most of them are from Columbia and Guatemala and go through a process of extracting toxins for a "clean" taste. Another factor is the MCT oil, which can come from coconut oil and other sources. But the bulletproof style calls for pure MCT oil, which has more ketone energy than other standard oils and kinds of butter. The addition of high-quality ingredients and only grass-fed butter makes a cup of coffee the Bulletproof version. When mixed with oils and butter, ordinary coffee will make a version of butter coffee rather than bulletproof style. Also, butter coffee may be ketogenic, but bulletproof in many cases is not. In short, butter coffee is a DIY version of bulletproof coffee. What are the health benefits of butter and bulletproof coffee? The biggest reason behind the consumption of these types of coffees is the absence of caffeine or sugar crash. The presence of fats leads to improved energy levels without frequent meals. Those with mid-morning hunger and mid-afternoon fatigue prefer drinking butter or bulletproof coffee. Some people have even noticed mental clarity and balanced blood sugar and cholesterol. A diet high in carbs can lead to numerous health issues, with "keto" coffee, one gets enough energy without the carbs or sugar. A cup of butter or bulletproof coffee has about 470 calories, which is the recommended calorie intake for a whole meal. Hence it tends to keep the consumer feeling full for hours. Such keto coffee can also help aid weight loss. These coffees help get rid of hunger pangs. Those who prefer fasting or intermittent fasting find it easier to skip meals for longer hours with the consumption of these coffees. Which one should you drink? With many health benefits and the creamy, rich taste of butter, these coffees are worth a shot. If you have more time on your hands and want to go for authentic bulletproof coffee, you can consider buying the pre-made coffee powders or the ingredients. Or, you can always blend some butter and coconut oil in your ordinary coffee for a quick and simple cup of butter coffee.
