With so many small appliances available to homeowners nowadays, it can be hard to sort through the options and figure out which make sense for you. For coffee drinkers having some sort of coffee machine is probably high on the list of priorities, as it ensures you’ve got a hot tasty brew to enjoy whenever you like. But what machine is right for you? That’s the real question.
For fans of the popular cappuccino style of drink, a Nespresso machine could be the ideal investment. Nespresso cappuccino has become very popular and with good reason. But before you make the purchase, let’s take a look at how to make a cappuccino with the Nespresso and some other basic tips and advice for using and maintaining the machine.
What Is a Nespresso Cappuccino Machine?
Not sure what a Nespresso machine even is? Well, let's start with the basics and that's the fact that they come in two different categories, each with its pros and cons. There is the Vertuo and the original Nespresso machine. If you are the type that strictly wants to enjoy espresso-based drinks, then the original machine will be more than enough. If, however, you want to branch out and try different types of drinks, then you'll need to purchase the Vertuo model - as this one is capable of more.
The Nespresso machine gives homeowners a simple and fast way to make espresso-based drinks at home, without having to go to a fancy coffee shop. They are different from the standard coffee machine, so it's not usually an either-or situation; instead, people tend to invest in both styles of machines. The process being used is different, which then affects the taste and quality.
For those unfamiliar with the difference between a regular cup of coffee and espresso, there are a few factors that stand out. Espresso contains a lot more caffeine, is enjoyed in small quantities, is stronger/bolder, and tends to be thicker in terms of consistency. Unlike coffee, espressos have layers to them that taste and look different: there is the crema, body and heart.
What is the crema?
The cream is the top layer of the espresso - this is what tops it off. It tends to be golden in color and sweeter in flavor. Much of the flavor is found in the crema.
What is the body?
The body is the middle section of the espresso and tends to have a caramel color to it. It's darker than the crema and isn't quite as flavorful.
What is the heart?
The heart is the bottom part of the espresso, sitting on the base of the cup. It is the darkest in color and the boldest/richest in flavor. Some describe the heart as tasting bitter. It shouldn't be so bitter that it is not enjoyable, however.
As you sip on your espresso, the idea is that you get portions of all three layers in each sip, making for a very robust flavor profile. Espresso certainly isn’t for everyone, but for those who do enjoy it, you’ll find that having an at-home espresso machine is very convenient.

As mentioned, there are two main categories of the Nespresso machine. It all comes down to how versatile you want the machine to be and what style of drinks you plan on making. How to Make an Espresso with Nespresso
Speaking of ease of use, how exactly do you make espresso or cappuccino with your Nespresso machine? Each model will have its features but here we’ll cover the basics of operation.
Make sure the water tank is at least half full before you start – ideally, it should be full. You can use water from a bottle, filtered water or tap water. Keep in mind that tap water can be hard on the machine and create scaling. The better the quality of water you use, the better your espresso or cappuccino will taste. After filling the water tank, you can turn the machine on. It typically takes under a minute to warm up.
Now, place your mug on the machine in the specified spot. Always be sure to use the right-sized cup for your specific Nespresso model. You can now select the capsule you want to brew, open the capsule container, and drop it in. Depending on the model you have, you will now select the cup size and then start the process. Make sure you dispose of the used capsule and don't leave it in the machine.
What Else Can You Make in a Nespresso?
Does Nespresso make cappuccino, you may be wondering? It sure does, along with a whole bunch of other drinks. As long as you've bought one of the versatile models, you'll be able to brew a wide array of cold and hot beverages. Before you even purchase a Nespresso, it is a good idea to check out the different types of capsules available, as this will help you to choose the ideal category and model of machine.
Some great recipes to try, all of which begin with your Nespresso machine, include:

A few things to consider as you shop for a Nespresso should be:
- The cost, since they range in price from budget models, to high-end models with a high ticket price.
- How big is the machine? Will it fit on your counter, or can you store it easily?
- What color would work in your kitchen?
- Do you want smart features?
- How big of a cup do you want to be able to brew?
- How does the lid open?
- How big is the water tank? How much can it hold?
- Can it make espresso and coffee?
- Does it automatically recognize the capsule type?
- How quiet is the machine?
- How fast does it heat up and brew?
- Does it feature a milk frother?
- What is the menu of options like? Is it an LCD menu, which is easy to use?
- Does the design fit in with your kitchen decor?
As you go through this list, some questions will be more high priority than others, but it all comes down to personal preference. It can also be helpful to watch infomercials or videos online showing how the machines work and “tours” of the different types. Chances are you're better off getting a machine with too many features rather than too little. This means you can grow into the machine rather than grow out of it. You don’t want to be having to replace it a year or two down the road.

Just because 2022 has only just started, doesn’t mean it’s not too early to make a fabulous purchase. Investing in a Nespresso machine could be the best money you spend all year, as you’ll have fabulous hot and cold beverages to look forward to.
