Empowering Traditional Coffee Growers
Aiming to empower traditional, single-family farms and encourage voluntary sustainability standards, 20000 smallholder coffee farmers in the Mount Elgon region of Uganda organized themselves under the umbrella of the Kawacom Uganda Limited- Sipi Falls Scheme. Over the years, the group has grown organically to 14,000 farms with sustainable methodologies and Organic, Utz, RA and Café certifications. The focus of the farmer groups has expanded to include productivity, quality, gender parity, economic growth, group governance, diversification, resilience and specialisation. Our members are trained to self-screen their produce and adhere to best practices during the growing, harvesting and processing of their coffees.
Collaborating For Growth
Mount Elgon towers serenely over small coffee farms sprinkled along its slopes. For centuries, the mineral-rich soil of Africa’s oldest volcano has nourished these small farms, each inherited, owned and maintained by a single family. As market forces grew insistently more focussed on scale and price, small coffee growers found it difficult to remain in business while maintaining their eco-friendly agricultural practices. They needed a solution that would preserve their land and way of life while improving their crop. With this aim, Kawacom Uganda Limited- Sipi Falls Scheme was founded in the year 2000 and now has 20000 farms.
